Yeah, to add on to Riverfur98's thunderpath theory, It was said that he was named Thunder because the midist of Storm is Thunder.
From The Book:
..."I don't even know what to call him!" he mewed. Turtle Tail bent her face close to the kit's and brushed her muzzle against his. " What's your name, little one?" The kit looked up at her, bewildered " I don't know." he squeaked. "Maybe Storm hadn't decided on names yet." Gray Wing meowed.... "What about Thunder?" she suggested. "He was born to Storm, Thunder is the midist of Thunder." ...

he r the first leader ever of thunderclan. it says on the internet that he was named after the thunderpath. kewl huh. He wuz never called thunderstar, cuz that wasnt a tradition yet
